Push (movie review)

I found Push an entertaining movie. Now days I don't get to see many movies in the theater what with 60 hour weeks and fatherhood and all. But I do enjoy a flick from time to time on the old laptop when I have a little down time. And this week I was given two. This week on my desk was a copy of Push. I'm guessing a coworker took pity on me and dropped it off for me.

I was a fan of Jumper and while this is not a sequel to Jumper in the truest since of the word, it is a in spirit a Jumpers Sequel. While I did enjoy the movie I though the setting was a little strange. I would have preferred a English city, cough London cough cough. The whole Singapore thing was distracting and really didn't make a whole lot of seance.

Really I was rather happy with the effects and powers. I did think a couple of them were a little strange for a Psychic powers movie. The banshee scream powers and super scent powers didn't fit the Metal powers theme in the opening. Maybe i'm just old but they felt out of place in this movie.

The Pusher, Movers, and Watchers were very enjoyable and thought out fairly well. The characters followed a set of rules through out the movie and and there was really very little deviation from those rules. This is one of those things that bother me in movies a great deal. If you set a rule follow it, If you break from the normal constraints of an ability as portrayed in other genre fiction establish the new rules early in the movie so the audience can adapt to the new rules. If you don't your going to be accused of cheating. There are a couple of these points in the movie were you assume powers are going to work IN this movie like in others and then they toss a wrench in the works and don't explain the change.

Another problem is how everyone on the film is a Martial artistes on par with Jackie Chan. Give me a break, ok not everyone with a power is a Xmen. Cant we have a little realism in our make believe powers.

The story was a little convoluted and wondered from place to place at one point I thought it was going to pull a M Night shame-on-me but they chickened out and explained it away.

As I said I didn't pay for the movie so I may be a little more forgiving then if I had but I would like to think I would have enjoyed either way.

Watch long and prosper
